Fifth's on the Fifth!

It has been a weird week for us around here! A little over a week ago B had a low grade fever and complained about a sore throat. It was Friday before Memorial Day weekend and we called to get in to see Dr. L before the holiday. Let me just say, B LOVES her pediatrician. I mean she loves him. I told her we were going to go to the doctor and she jumped for joy and pumped her fist in a YES! Tells you a lot about him. I share her sentiments because he takes his time with us and is very through.

So we went, step test was negative but he went a head and gave us some antibiotics because the culture wouldn't come back until Tuesday and it wouldn't hurt for her to be on it. Within 24 hours she was back to normal. 1 week later I noticed a rash on her checks. We had been playing outside and I figured it was a heat rash. It got a little worse until the next night I noticed that it had spread to her arms and chest. Of course Scott was out of town and it was now Saturday night. I was teaching not only Sunday school but helping on Bible Hour that next day. With the guys all at the Men's Retreat, I knew that they would be short handed. Luckily Mimi came to the rescue and kept them both that morning. I did some frantic research online that morning and had a pretty strong feeling it was Fifths Disease- a diagnosis made on June 5th! B was acting normal but the rash grew worse and worse. I took some pics after her nap. Monday was the first day back for MDO and the rash was even thicker! I called work to reschedule my time there, dropped MK off at school and back to see Dr L we went. She looks so pretty, till you see this!

I was really nervous when upon giving Dr L's our details remembered that B had a tick bite on Tuesday. I panicked until Dr L reassured me that she would have a high fever and not be acting normal. Wheww!

It is Fifths Disease and can last for up to 4 weeks. Luckily in the rash phase it is no longer contagious. I have no idea how she got it, we haven't been out and about as much the last few weeks. All I know is that I am ready for it to be gone!! I have been hesitant to go anywhere with her because she looks like she has leprosy and even though I know she isn't going to spread it along, other mothers don't. So I am sparing us all the dirty looks and the feeling that we are the "unclean". :) This isolation business is for the birds, though. It's horrible! B HATES to be hot and will only last 10 minutes in the backyard before exclaiming "I feel some sweat, I need to go inside". We went to the park this morning and after 5 minutes she told me she needed "some shade". She happily played in the pavilion while I pushed my drenched sweat Mallory in the swing. Funny how your kids can be so different. Just glad everyone was out and happy!
